The last shot of rain was Sunday and theres been some cooler weather for the beginning part of this week. Minutes later the 150 A-TOM-MIK copper took a ride. There were salmon porpoising around the green can and the red can. Still hanging on to warm (hot) weather but theres a change afoot in the forecast with chance of significant rain mid week and a cool down. Considering that January is usually a bit of an in-between time frame after the fall salmon/brown trout action and before spring steelhead, the few guys out taking advantage of the weather and flows are doing pretty good. Not much precip was realized for the past weekend, so all the trib flows are on the drop and clearing for now. Flows in the Oak are clearing slowly and hanging in somewhere between med and slightly high. Hopefully the fishing pressure overall is likewise spread out like the fish. Water color will be on a slow mend. Anglers fishing from boats should be able to maintain at least six feet of distance between one another. Any rainfall is really going to get things cranking and water color this time is likely to get dirty. The lake conditions could not have been better, we just needed to get them on some fish. Theres a chance of an inch or two maybe south of the area off lake Erie. Remember use caution in interpreting the upstream USGS gauging stations on the Oak that can mean little or nothing for flows downstream of the Waterport hydro especially in considering both the turbine channel and overflow channel. Slower action there reported just lately after some good quality fish were hooked in the previous higher and dirtier water color. Fishing pressure is real light I saw just one car on the Oak. The other area smaller tribs have had some on and off estuary action and likewise look for Kings firing upstream there too if flows go high. Weather and the calendar is the biggest factor for angling pressure and bringing more fishermen out or keeping them indoors. Good steelhead action for fresh fish up and down the OOrchard River on retreating and clearing flows for begin of Mar 2017. On Sept. 11 there will be a First Responders Fishing Day, sponsored by the Southtowns Walleye Association of WNY. Classic scenario in the Oak where dirty water color lags behind the highest flows. For now flows are about mod and just slightly stained. That will subsequently melt. For now trib water temps are on their greatest fall so far this fall season. It has been closed to traffic for construction since late April. So well hope that if it stays cold-ish that some more snow will come. This area will be on the far end of it. In subsequent years ahead when runs are made up of multiple year classes of fish the returns and fishing prospects could be even better! Lots of snow across WNY from an area wide snow. Good chances for fresh fish action ahead for this beginning part of March especially as higher and more stained flows may come and go. By most accounts if youre moving around and trying different drifts and spots, guys are hooking up. And then theres always that concentration of fish and people at the dam. Either way waiting for the mythical lower and clearer conditions for steelhead action may lead to lost chances. The next significant rise in flows may bring on some fresh steelhead action thru March. Flows yesterday in the AM were down but did rebound nicely to the mod or almost med flows weve had this season. Fishing pressure is moderate right now and generally guys are moving around offering chances to fish different spots between the swingers and the drifters be it fly, float or spin. Looks like more of the same in the near term forecast anyway. Looks like a good head of turbine water with overflow levels diminished. This will entice more brown trout, steelhead and Atlantic and Pacific salmon to run up these streams, improving conditions for the fish and expanding opportunities for anglers. Lake conditions have been very erratic over the last week. Fishing pressure is light with most guys reporting a few steelhead and/or browns. No consistent cool down or big freshets yet so the action has been on and off. Thats more typical of what we would have normally seen a month ago. Flows in the Oak are restored thru the turbine channel. Flies and egg imaginations have been the best baits for the salmon. Thanks to this forecast, flows in the Oak and other area smaller tribs will be (again) on the way to high, blown and dirty. Spawning fish like this can be found in the gravel runs if you choose to target them or else find the real action in adjacent holes for the staged or drop back fish. If you still have a boat in the water, you can fish west of Sodus Bay in 30 fow. The previous cold temps sure did clear up the water color with just a nice stain of about 2 ft of visibility. In the upper river, Rzucidlo was tossing No. Lower Niagara River action picked up a tick or two this week for bass and walleye according to Lisa Drabczyk with Creek Road Bait and Tackle in Lewiston. Hours are 7 am till 5pm. Some days youll find the only active fish up in that warm water so dont be afraid to fish up high. A good WNW wind thru last night probably moved more fish near shore or into the tribs from Lake Ontario but dont look for those fish to loiter in estuary or rivermouth spots at this point in the season. At least its good to see organizers and attendees efforts at getting back to a normal pre-Covid scene. So when even a reasonable high and stained water window presents itself, that may be the best time to fish. There are miles of water for fish to be dropping back from compared to about only a short mile of Oak water. Same for estuary slow water areas on the smaller tribs where guys have had on and off action. It was getting a bit frustrating so since it was a short trip we worked our way back to the nose and started fishing for lake trout. Agreeable temps are expected today (Tuesday) and tomorrow (Wednesday) with a forecasted snow storm expected Thursday. The forecast after the warmup for the end of week/beginning part of the weekend is back to cold temps with snow on the backside of the rain so the up and down, 2 3 day cycle will continue. Remember you still have to get out and fish Come experience great fishing as it takes place instead of solely relying and waiting on internet reports.
